Course Overview

“Starting Your Own Business: A Guide for Gay Male Entrepreneurs” is the first online course designed by an experienced expert gay men’s specialist psychotherapist (over 30 years) and life/career/executive/relationship coach, Ken Howard, LCSW, CST.

This course helps gay men who dream of opening their own business, to stop working for others and start working for themselves, to gain more autonomy over their working life, and to earn more, on their terms.  The course helps you go from dreaming to doing, combining both the psychological mind-set of self-empowerment with the practical considerations every business owner must know to start and maintain their business, for any customer/client product or service.

About Course

This course has over 3.5 hours of video instruction as well as integrated assignments to help the material apply to you and make it your own.  Its nine chapters cover topics such as the importance of a self-empowerment mind-set, the unique considerations for gay male business owners, identifying your passions and strengths, and so much more up to networking and collaborating as a gay male entrepreneur, and evaluating and reflecting on your progress.

What To Expect From The Course

In this course, you can expect to:

  • Learn an overview and some deep-dives into the focused mind-set you need to conceive, start, run, and evaluate your business for the long term

  • Have a clearer view of what’s involved in opening a business, and how to approach the various facets of daily operations

  • Raise the level of confidence and comfort you have about approaching the enterprise, and what it would mean for you to become a self-employed entrepreneur, “making a living, while making a difference”

Who the Course is For

This course is designed

  • For gay men who are getting tired of working for others, and have had an idea, dream, or passion about starting their own business, either just recently, or for a long time, but don’t know where to begin

  • For gay men who want a one-stop-shopping overview of opening and running a business, specifically for gay male entrepreneurs.

  • For gay men who want to take full control of their vocational, professional life, free of the burdens of working for someone else’s profits and becoming free of awkward or even abusive anti-gay discrimination, that despite being illegal, can still occur in the workplace.

  • For the gay male solo entrepreneur freelance or gig economy worker. Singers, musicians, actors, models, designers, artists, stylists, personal assistants, writers, rideshare drivers, or any freelancer who works on a 1099 basis would benefit from both the empowering self-awareness and the logistics of making the most of freelancing.

What Makes This Course Unique

There are other courses that give an overview of starting a business, and many contain excellent material.  But this course is unique in that comes from specifically a gay male peer, a gay man who has run his own business serving gay men (individuals, couples, polycules) in both psychotherapy services as a licensed clinical social worker in California, and coaching nationwide for the United States and worldwide, for over 32 years.   This course simultaneously discusses the details of business operations, while also supporting you in cultivating a psychological mind-set for success.

Course Reviews

“This course gave me the kick in the butt that I needed to stop procrastinating and get moving toward opening my business in event planning. I’m now well under way and enjoying the success I used to dream of but was too hesitant to start. The course got me practical, usable information on how to get over the hump and on my way.”

Early Bird Ticket

The course fee is a one-time payment of $249. But for the first 10 students who enroll, you can receive all chapters of the course for one payment of just $199 for permanent access, so that at various stages of your business journey, you can revisit the chapters that focus on your current goals and challenges.

FAQ

  • Why should I buy this course rather than any of the other business courses out there?

Because this course is unique. It’s the first online course written/presented by a gay men’s specialist therapist and coach who has run his own six-figure business for over 26 years, and includes not only business operations information, but also psychological mind-set support and “real life” personal/professional examples most other instructors are reluctant to disclose. It also contains and covers more material than most of the similar courses I’ve seen. And, it’s designed for maximum value and results, not just an overview without action to follow it up. It’s meant to be a course that will motivate you to put the information into practice.

  • Why does this course cost what it does?

Because with any kind of professional (psychotherapist, physician, attorney, consultant, coach, professor, etc.), you’re not just paying for the time it takes to meet with you live, or the time it takes to record the (hours of) videos for the course. Professionals bring years of education and experience that go into what they say during that time, and there is no substitute for putting in all that work over all those years. In this course, I’m providing hours of video instruction, but I’m also drawing on over eight years of formal higher education past high school, over 3,200 hours of supervised psychotherapy practice before taking and passing two state licensing exams, dozens of hours of coaching training, dozens of hours (9 per year for over 30 years) of continuing education courses to renew that license, over ten years of full-time professional experience that predates opening my business, and coaching thousands of (gay male) clients in my practice on their professional career growth and development, including opening and sustaining their own business, in my full-time private practice of over 20 years. There is at least some of all that education, information, and lived experience that informs the course video material in every lesson.

  • Is there a guarantee that I’ll have a lucrative business?

No ethical therapist, coach, or course instructor can guarantee that a course (especially not alone) would be all you need to succeed in your business. Variables such as the business you’re in, the location you’re in, the level of your own motivation and efforts, aptitude, stamina, resilience, consumer behavior, market and economic forces, cultural issues, social issues, and just plain luck also factor in. But the course can inform what has worked for me, and many others (such as my clients, or possibly friends or relatives or colleagues as well), over decades of experience.

  • Is this course for me if I don’t live in the United States?

Yes, with some adjustments. The national marketplace, market forces, economic trends, resources, cultural and social issues, currency, laws, and tax issues would all be variables to consider in your local country. The specific laws might differ, but many/most of the general concepts of the course would apply, wherever you live.

  • Is this course for me if I’m not even gay?

Yes; this course would also be valuable for many other demographics. I include specific focus on gay male business owners because my professional life, as both a psychotherapist and a coach, has been on LGBT issues in general and gay men’s issues in particular in my GayTherapyLA and GayCoachingLA brands. But many other groups could benefit from the course.

  • If I take the course, what do I do next?

After the course, you should consider how to take action and implement it to apply to your own business, situation, and personality. If you like the material in the course, you might want to consider becoming a client for individual coaching services (one time, or ongoing) for consultation ([email protected], or phone/WhatsApp at 310-339-5778). You can have as many, or as few, consultation sessions as you wish; there no minimum commitments, but coaching clients (just like therapy clients) tend to get the most out of those services with a once per week schedule, but I try to accommodate many different client schedules and budgets. For clients outside California or the United States, we just calculate your local time zone for my office hours (generally Monday through Friday, from the early afternoon to the mid-evening). My team and I might also develop some kind of group support services (such as an online coaching group on Zoom) if the cohort of students for the course grows and wants that.

  • Why did you decide to offer courses after years of psychotherapy and coaching?

Because with the global success of my free blog (GayTherapyLA.com/blog) and my free podcast show (“The Gay Therapy LA Podcast with Ken Howard, LCSW, CST), I realized that many readers/listeners wanted more material, but might not be able to afford or have the time to schedule live sessions with me. I wanted to provide a professional service that might be more accessible to more people, worldwide, where they could access my expertise but at their own pace.
